Radio 9News reported that the plane was privately owned and came from New South Wales state on January 6. The plane crashed not long after takeoff at about 4:00 p.m. on January 7 (local time).
Police believe the plane crashed on Philip Rock near Rottnest Island at the entrance to Thomson Bay. Witnesses said the plane stalled, swaying from side to side before the left wing impacted rocks.
The plane was half submerged when water police and nearby boaters responded. Four people were rescued, including two women over 40 years old who were seriously injured.
Dozens of tourists on the ferry to Rottnest Island witnessed the plane crash.
