At a New Year’s press conference in Taipei on January 1, Taiwanese leader Lai Thanh Duc reiterated his desire to exchange with China. He has repeatedly called for negotiations but was rejected. China views Taiwan as an indivisible part of its territory, while Mr. Lai is said to support secession, arguing that only the Taiwanese people can decide their future.
