The European Commission has recently approved significant support of 1.3 billion eurosfollowing state aid rules, for Silicon Box’s ambitious project to build the first European advanced packaging and chiplet integration factory. This initiative, which will see the light in Novararepresents a total investment of 3.2 billion euros, underlining Italy’s commitment to strengthening its role in the semiconductor and high technology sector.
This is the third Italian investment in the chip sector approved by the European Commission, out of a total of five projects. “A further important confirmation of the solidity of our strategic plan on microelectronics, which has triggered a flywheel effect in investments, bringing the sector in Italy to exceed 9 billion euros in 2024 alone, placing us in second place in Europe after Germany” declared Minister Urso.
The investment of Silicon Box will strengthen Europe’s security of supply, resilience and technological autonomy in the semiconductor sector, in line with the objectives outlined by the European Chips Act and in the European Commission’s policy guidelines 2024-2029.
The Novara site will help meet the demand for semiconductor assembly, mainly in the European market, to enable new technologies such as next-generation applications in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and electric vehicle components.
At full capacity the plant will be able to generate 1,600 new direct jobs, to which indirect ones will be added, and approximately 1,000 for the construction of the factory. The factory will be built and operated according to European net zero principles, minimizing the impact on the environment.
“Recent global upheavals clearly demonstrate how critical it is to build a more resilient supply chain for semiconductors in Europe. For this reason, the government has placed chips and microelectronics at the center of its strategic priorities, aware that they represent an essential pillar to guarantee the security and competitiveness of our industrial system” concluded the minister.
