The ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, which provides for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, will be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Constitution Amendment Bill related to simultaneous elections is also included in the Lok Sabha’s listed agenda for Tuesday.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill will be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal. Meghwal is also likely to introduce a bill tomorrow to amend the Union Territory Government Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019.
The Bill seeks to align elections to the Assemblies of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry with the aim of holding simultaneous elections. The Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill earlier this month.
The Union Cabinet had accepted the recommendations of the high-level committee on simultaneous elections in September. This panel was chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
