Responding to ABC News, Secretary Mayorkas said there are currently more than 1 million UAVs registered in the US. He also mentioned the case of a Chinese citizen in Northern California who was arrested the previous week on suspicion of operating a UAV above the Vandenberg Space Force base.
Also on December 15, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the federal government will put into operation a modern UAV detection system.
The new measure was implemented after a series of UAVs appeared, causing Stewart International Airport, about 96 km north of New York City, to close the runways for 1 hour on the night of December 13.
The airport serves both commercial and military flights, and is located across from the New York State National Guard air base.
