ABC News and broadcaster George Stephanopoulos on December 14 (US time), reached a settlement agreement with President-elect Donald Trump in a defamation lawsuit, AFP reported today, December 15.
The lawsuit stems from comments made by Mr. Stephanopoulos, an ABC News broadcaster, while interviewing US Congressman Nancy Mace. This broadcaster said that Mr. Trump must be “responsible for the crime of raping” writer and journalist E. Jean Carroll.
However, a jury in New York in 2023 ruled that Mr. Trump was guilty of “sexual abuse”, not “rape” in the case.
The terms of the settlement by judge Lisette M. Reid in Miami court (Florida) state that ABC News must pay $15 million to a fund related to Mr. Trump, along with paying lawsuit costs of $1 million.
ABC News and broadcaster Stephanopoulos also had to publicly apologize for their incorrect statements toward Mr. Trump when conducting the above interview.
The settlement marks Mr. Trump’s latest legal victory after winning the presidential election on November 5.
Also on December 14 (US time), Mr. Trump announced that he had chosen Mr. Devin Nunes, General Director of the social network company Truth Social, to serve as chairman of the intelligence advisory council.
Some other nominations on the day include Mr. Richard Grenell as special presidential envoy for special missions in world hot spots such as Venezuela and North Korea; Constellations General Director Bill White as US Ambassador to Belgium; Mr. Troy Edgar is Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
