In 2024 there are five terms expressed on TikTok officially entered the Treccani. The platform was born in 2018 as a social media for short lip-sync videos, but over time it has become a place of inspiration, in-depth analysis and learning, capable of leaving a mark on the daily lives of Italians. As? Thanks to the words frequently used by creators on social media, you have become an integral part of the daily lexicon.
Do you speak TikTok?
After the exploit of ‘Booktok‘ in 2023, 2024 sees the terms as ‘Creator‘, ‘Delulu‘, ‘Demure‘, ‘Pov‘ And ‘Slayare‘ emerged from the social community, becoming part of the daily life of Italians.
TikTok is a mix of tradition and pop culture and Italian is a living language that yes evolves in the name of inclusiveness and originality. He explained it Massimo BrayGeneral Director of Treccani: “New communication technologies call us to interpret linguistic phenomena in real time and in completely new social and cultural contexts” said the publisher, guest of the event ‘2024 on TikTok‘, which was held in Milan on Thursday 12 December.
Five new neologisms
“There is an observatory – explains Bray – of the Italian language where young experts record the use of some words spread in social media, but this does not mean that they become official words of the language, but precisely neologisms“. In detail, here is the meaning of the five terms landed in the encyclopedia.
Creator: “Person who, by trade or passion, creates and publishes original and innovative content, mainly videos, for digital platforms”;
Delulu: “In the language of social media, it is said of who, and often by whom, indulges in unattainable and destined-to-be-broken fantasies, for example dreaming of romantic relationships with famous people such as creators and influencers”;
Demure: “In person, elegant and reserved, sober and discreet in the way he presents himself and behaves; but often, through sharing platforms such as TikTok, it is said in an antiphrastic sense, to ridicule attitudes of affected composure and hypocritical decorum”;
POV: “English acronym (Point Of View – ‘point of view’), used to indicate a type of shot, used in social media and video games, in which the creator of the content does not appear on the scene but shows a subjective point of view specific to encourage identification with the story on the part of those watching the video”;
Slayare: “In social media parlance, do a great job, deliver a very satisfying performance, used impressively in a conversational dimension.”
The Chinese platform welcomes talents of all kinds who propose, through their vision, new forms of storytelling: “It is also an incubator of talents and innovative ideas that transform passions into real professions”, commented Salvatore Di Mari, Head of Operations TikTok Italy and Spain, who underlines how TikTok continues to reinvent the language and build bridges between generations .
Even Treccani, now close to turning 100, needs to evolve and has done so by listening to the voice of those who live TikTok every day: “They say that young people have no talents, that they don’t want to read or get information. In reality theirs is just a different vision, they use reading and culture in an innovative way. This is the true reality of TikTok”, concluded Massimo Bray.
