Sheet South China Morning Post reported that a large explosion caused a fire at a luxury apartment complex in Nam Son district, Shenzhen city, Guangdong province (China) at 3:00 p.m. on December 11 (local time).
Emergency forces including police, firefighters, and medics quickly arrived and sealed off the scene. The cause of the fire and injuries are unknown at this time. However, medical staff confirmed at least one person fell from the building.
The city fire department said it sent 16 fire engines and 80 firefighters to the scene, according to Xinhua news agency.
Images circulating online show that the explosion occurred on a high floor of the apartment building and smoke is still coming from the affected apartment. Adjacent apartments had broken balcony glass and windows. Images also show a woman sitting on the balcony of the damaged apartment.
According to the page Dimsum Dailywitnesses working in an office building 300 meters away felt the tremor, some heard a loud explosion, then saw debris falling.
The fire department confirmed that they received an emergency call at 2:46 p.m. regarding an incident at an apartment in phase 2 of the Shenzhen Bay Joy Mansion apartment complex. Firefighters believe that the fire started near the apartment on the 28th floor of the apartment building and the cause may have been a gas tank explosion. After the incident, a woman fell from the building and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
