The Lazio municipality of Minturno will receive the prestigious recognition of “Tsunami Ready”becoming the first in Italy to obtain this certification by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO). The delivery ceremony will see the participation of leading figures in the field of seismology and civil protection, including Alessandro Amato, head of the Tsunami Warning Center (CAT) of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and president for the Tsunami Warning System UNESCO Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation. The mayor of Minturno, Gerardo Stefanelli, and the deputy mayor Elisa Venturo will also be present. The award will be presented, among others, by Denis Chang Seng of IOC-UNESCO and by Pio Di Manna, researcher at the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA).
The “Tsunami Ready” program aims to promote preparedness for tsunami risk, actively involving local administrations, Civil Protection and citizens to improve safety during all emergency phases. Minturno began the accreditation process in July 2020, becoming the first municipality in the Euro-Mediterranean area to adopt this tsunami risk mitigation program.
