Consideration of evacuation of Al Shifa Hospital
Earlier this week, after the Israeli attacks, WHO and other UN officials visited Al Shifa Hospital, after which they appealed for its evacuation. A Hamas health official said more than 80 people were killed Saturday in twin attacks on a northern Gaza refugee camp, which also included a United Nations school hosting displaced people.
Social media video verified by news agency AFP shows blood-stained bodies on the floor of a building in Jabaliya, the largest refugee camp in the Palestinian territory, where mattresses were laid under school desks. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency UNRWA, described “horrific images” of the incident, while Egypt described the bombing as a “war crime” and a “deliberate insult to the United Nations”. Hamas health officials said a separate attack on Saturday on another building in the Jabaliya camp killed 32 people from the same family, including 19 children. Without specifying the attacks, the Israeli military said “Jabaliya “An incident in the area” is being reviewed.
Gaza’s Alshifa hospital in focus these days
Israel vowed to eradicate Hamas in response to the October 7 attacks. 1,200 people died in Israel in Hamas attacks, while in retaliation, 12,300 people have been killed in Gaza so far, including 5,000 children. Gaza’s largest hospital, al-Shifa, has been in main focus in recent days. Israeli forces have alleged that Hamas uses it as a command center, while Hamas and the medical staff have denied these claims.
On Sunday, WHO said that when a U.N. assessment team arrived at the hospital, it found the site transformed into a “death zone”, with a mass grave at the entrance and about 300 patients left inside along with 25 health workers. “WHO and partners are developing plans for the immediate evacuation of remaining patients, staff and their families,” the organization said. Seeing the pain of the people of Gaza, he urged for an immediate ceasefire.
