The renowned and acclaimed Irish actor Michael Gambon died this Thursday in a hospital at the age of 82, according to his family.
To younger audiences, Gambon – who also had British nationality – is known as Professor Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films.
But in his long career, his appearances in films such as Fantastic Mr. Fox by Wes Anderson and The Cook, the thief, his wife & her lover stand out. and Her Lover”) by Peter Greenaway.
In his career spanning more than six decades, Gambon also did theater and radio. In 1998 he was knighted of the British Empire for his services to the entertainment industry.
The news of his death was shared by his widow and son who reported that their “beloved husband and father” passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, after suffering from pneumonia.
Extensive and award-winning career
Something in him always felt drawn to acting and he became an avid film buff. But it wasn’t until he was 20 that he began to actively pursue a theater career.
He began writing letters to various theater companies, inventing information on his resume that detailed his skill as a performer.
He was eventually offered a job at the Gate Theater in his native Dublin, which failed to substantiate his false claim that he had taken the lead role in a George Bernard Shaw play in London.
With his participation in William Shakespeare’s Othello, he performed in several theaters in Europe.
His career took off when he became one of the original members of the acting company at the Laurence Olivier National Theater in London.
In the United Kingdom he won three Olivier Awards for his theatrical performances and 4 Baftas Awards. In the United States he was nominated for the Emmy Award and the Tony Award.
On television he played the French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series Maigret and was also known for his role as Philip Marlow in The Singing Detective on the BBC.
Gambon took on the role of Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts wizarding school, in the hit Harry Potter series, following the death of Richard Harris in 2003.
Curiously, whoever played a school principal in JK Rowling’s magical world did not fondly remember his student years in the real world.
“I don’t have any happy memories,” he said in an interview about his time as a student. That explains why at 15 he left school to start working as an apprentice toolmaker.
