After almost two months after the arrival of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, his presence continues to bring benefits to the MLS club because this Tuesday different reports assured that The Argentine could play the Copa Libertadores 2024.
At 36, Messi could finally debut in the Copa Libertadores next season. According to reports by journalists Hugo Balassone (TyC Sports) and Samuel Vargas (DirecTV Sports) Inter Miami would have received an invitation to play the competition.
The information indicates that it would have been the president of the Argentine Football Association, Chiqui Tapia, who would have served as an intermediary between Conmebol and Inter Miami for the invitation to arrive.
In fact, it was Tapia himself who said at a press conference that Alejandro Domínguez, president of Conmebol and Jorge Más together with David Beckham, the highest authorities of the American team, are in talks.
“The presidents are talking so that there are some competitions that are carried out jointly so that South American football continues to rank with that of here. This generates the expectation that one day there will be a competition between Conmebol and Concacaf”, commented Tapia.
However there would be the problem of the calendartaking into account that the Copa Libertadores starts regularly in February and the MLS in March, but these are details to be resolved.
If Inter Miami’s presence in the Copa Libertadores is confirmed, it will become the first MLS team to play in the top South American tournament. However, it would not be the first North American team to participate in a forgotten Conmebol event.
In 2005 and 2007, DC United was one of the participants in the Copa Sudamericana as guests, which on that occasion was played only for keys and the Americans started directly from the 8th final, being eliminated in both years.
