Education Minister Getahun Mekuria stated that at the “National Education Conference” held in the capital Addis Ababa, rebel TPLF members caused the total or partial destruction of 7,000 schools.
Mekuria noted that in the last month alone, 455 schools with 88,000 students enrolled were destroyed by TPLF rebels.
Spreading the conflict to the northern Afar and Amhara provinces, the TPLF has been advancing for weeks.
Entering the historic city of Lalibela in Amhara state, the TPLF clashes with federal forces to take the city of Weldiya.
Although the Ethiopian army achieved partial success in the operation launched against the rebels in November 2020, it withdrew from Tigray’s capital Mekelle on June 28, citing the humanitarian situation.
The TPLF, which ruled the Tigray province for a while and was an active force in the country’s politics, entered into a political conflict with the parties representing the Amhara and Oromo, the country’s largest ethnic groups, in power after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018.
