- RCB confirms play-off
- Four teams for fourth place
- KKR is more likely
Chennai are top with 18 points from 12 matches. Delhi is in second place with the same number of points. These two teams have secured one and two positions respectively. The RCB, led by Virat Kohli, is likely to finish third. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad have been knocked out of the IPL by four points after winning just two of their last 12 matches.
Thus the team possibilities
The most likely team in the battle for fourth place is the Kolkata Knight Riders. Kolkata have 12 points from 13 matches. With a good run rate, KKR is more likely to reach the playoffs if they win the final. Kolkata’s last match is against Rajasthan Royals.
Not easy for Punjab
The Punjab Kings are fifth in the points table but the chances are slim. The team has 10 points from 13 games. To reach the play-offs, they need to win by a large margin against top-ranked Chennai Super Kings. The outcome of other matches will also determine Punjab’s chances. Punjab can only move forward if Mumbai defeats Rajasthan, Mumbai defeats Hyderabad and Rajasthan defeats Kolkata. Punjab will not see a play-off if there is a change in this.
Crucial to Rajasthan
Currently in sixth position, Rajasthan Royals have two more matches to play. The matches are against Kolkata and Mumbai Indians. Rajasthan has a slightly higher net run rate than Mumbai. If they can beat Mumbai and Kolkata by a good margin, Sanju and his team can play in the play-offs.
The defending champions Mumbai Indians are seventh in the points table. The team suffered a series of defeats in the UAE. Mumbai’s problem is that they are lagging behind in run rate. The next matches are against Hyderabad and Rajasthan. If Rajasthan wins both the matches and defeats Kolkata, the chances will be clear for Rohit and his team.
There are seven games left before the playoffs. The last two league matches on Friday will be played at the same time. There will be two matches on Thursday as well. The IPL final will be played on October 15 at 7.30 pm.
