Of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 22 are in India. Not only this, Delhi is at the top of the list of the most polluted capital cities of the world. This information has been revealed from the World Air Quality Report 2020 prepared by the Swiss organization IQAir and released on Tuesday.
However, the report also mentioned that Delhi’s air quality has improved in 2020 as compared to 2019, but despite the improvement, Delhi ranks 10th among the most polluted cities in the world.
“India is showing prominence in the list of world’s most polluted cities and 22 out of the world’s 30 most polluted cities are there,” the report said.
Apart from Delhi, 21 more cities are:
- Ghaziabad, Bulandshahar, Bisarkh Jalalpur, Noida, Greater Noida, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Agra and Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh
- Bhiwadi in Rajasthan
- Faridabad, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, Bandhwadi, Gurugram, Yamunanagar, Rohtak and Dharuhera in Haryana
- Muzaffarpur in Bihar
According to the report, China’s most polluted city in the world is Xinjiang. After that, nine of the top 10 cities are from India.
Ghaziabad ranks second in the list of world’s most polluted cities. After that the number of Bulandshahar, Bisarkh Jalalpur, Noida, Greater Noida, Kanpur, Lucknow and Bhiwadi comes.
The pollution levels in these cities have been measured on the basis of PM 2.5.

Transportation, burning of fuel for cooking, power generation, industry, manufacturing work, burning of waste and burning of stubble from time to time are the main factors of pollution in India. According to the report, “Transport sector is the biggest source of PM2.5 pollutants in India’s cities”.
